Judge: Lesbian couple can proceed with Michigan adoption ban lawsuit

Judge Lesbian couple can proceed with Michigan adoption ban lawsuit
Detroit — A federal judge Monday refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by two lesbians that challenges a state ban on adoption by unmarried couples.

The order comes five days after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that has prevented married gay couples from receiving tax, health and retirement benefits that are usually available to married couples.

U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman cited last week’s Supreme Court ruling in which justices expressed concern that discriminatory legislation relegates same-sex relationships to a second-tier status and impairs the rights of tens of thousands of children being raised by same-sex couples.

Michigan lawmakers approve home heating program funded by utility surcharge of up to $1 per month

Michigan lawmakers approve home heating program funded by utility surcharge of up to $1 per month
LANSING – Electric utility customers could be charged up to $1 a month for a fund aimed at assisting low-income people with their home heating bills.

The Michigan Senate approved Senate Bill 284 by a 34-4 vote Tuesday, sending the measure to Gov. Rick Snyder. The House approved the bill last week.

The Michigan Public Service Commission would be allowed to approve a surcharge of up to $1 per month on customers’ electric bills to raise money for the fund. The fund would be capped so it could not raise more than $50 million a year.

How they voted: School dissolution, fireworks, Medicaid debated by Michigan lawmakers

How they voted School dissolution, fireworks, Medicaid debated by Michigan lawmakers

It typically gets busy at the Michigan Capitol right before lawmakers are scheduled for a break in session.

That’s happened recently as the Legislature tackles several issues before a summer recess, which could start at the end of this week.

Lawmakers are voting on proposals related to school districts in severe financial trouble, Medicaid and dozens of other topics.

Here are a few of the votes from last week:

Tim Bos calls in to talk about his petition against medicare expansion

The Petition

We, the undersigned citizens of Michigan, as the funding source for local, state, AND the federal government, are outraged by all elected officials shirking their responsibility to protect our rights, the fruits of our labor, and who have summarily ignored our widespread and well-known wishes to resist tyrannical attempts to shoulder us with the burden of providing a free healthcare handout to additional hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents annually by expanding Medicaid eligibility.

Furthermore, we find it remarkably irrelevant and an insult to our intelligence that state officials think it’s better to have a federal thief stealing from us instead of one sent by the state.

We are hereby notifying all legislators who voted in favor of this monstrosity, or intend to in the future, that we will neither support or assist in your re-election, and in many cases will be actively involved in the demise of your political careers.

We believe that you have violated our trust, financially enslaved ourselves, our children, and those still unborn, and that your actions were complicit in the destruction of the greatest healthcare system in the world, the financial stability of our nation, and the prosperity of every single man, woman, and child blessed with the unrivaled good fortune of American citizenship.

Therefore, you are no longer considered worthy of the privilege of representing us and our best interests as elected representatives, and we shall act accordingly- with prejudice.

Mike Rogers will not run for U.S. Senate

After months of speculation, U.S. Rep Mike Rogers announced Friday he will not run for U.S. Senate in 2014.

“After careful and thorough deliberation and long talks with my family, friends and supporters, I have determined that the best way for me to continue to have a direct impact for my constituents and the nation is to remain in the House of Representatives,” Rogers wrote in a letter to constituents.

“For me, the significance and depth of the impact I can make on my constituent’s behalf far outweighs the perceived importance of any title I might hold.”
