Judge: Lesbian couple can proceed with Michigan adoption ban lawsuit

Judge Lesbian couple can proceed with Michigan adoption ban lawsuit
Detroit — A federal judge Monday refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by two lesbians that challenges a state ban on adoption by unmarried couples.

The order comes five days after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that has prevented married gay couples from receiving tax, health and retirement benefits that are usually available to married couples.

U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman cited last week’s Supreme Court ruling in which justices expressed concern that discriminatory legislation relegates same-sex relationships to a second-tier status and impairs the rights of tens of thousands of children being raised by same-sex couples.

Will Michigan expand Medicaid? It could be decision day at state Capitol

How they voted Medicaid proposal splits Republicans in Michigan House

LANSING – Today could be the day that Michigan lawmakers ultimately decide whether to expand government health insurance to more than 400,000 additional people.

Gov. Rick Snyder cut short a trade trip to Israel to be in Lansing for Thursday’s legislative session – likely the last before a scheduled summer break that will eat up much of July and August. The Republican governor supports Medicaid expansion, and he wants an up-or-down vote on the proposal before that summer break.

Snyder was at the Capitol on Thursday, lobbying for Medicaid expansion.
