Snyder administration defends transparency after NERD fund lands governor on ‘worst’ list

Snyder administration defends transparency after NERD fund lands governor on 'worst' list

LANSING, MI — The Snyder administration defended its commitment to transparency on Wednesday after a national watchdog group criticized spending by a nonprofit fund the governor set up shortly before taking office.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) on Wednesday published its list of the 18 “worst governors in America,” lumping Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder amongst a group of lower-tier offenders who have “engaged in some conduct troubling enough to suggest their actions merit closer scrutiny.”

If Medicaid Expansion Passes, GOP ‘Yes’ Votes Likely Stuck Voting to Pay For It Too

BillSchuette

House Republicans who voted for the Medicaid expansion bill may have put themselves on the hook to cast “yes” votes for spending bills associated with the measure in the future.

When House Bill 4714 was passed by the House, 28 Republicans voted “yes.” But in doing so, they could have tied their hands regarding appropriation bills to follow.

Judge throws out state rep’s challenge to new Detroit River bridge

Bridge-To-Nowhere

Lansing — A Detroit mayoral candidate’s lawsuit seeking to block Gov. Rick Snyder’s plans to build a Detroit-to-Windsor bridge has been dismissed by an Ingham County judge.

Circuit Judge Joyce Draganchuk recently tossed out state Rep. Fred Durhal’s lawsuit challenging the governor’s legal authority to enter into a June 2012 agreement with Canadian officials without the Legislature’s approval.

Snyder bypassed lawmakers last year after they refused to vote to approve Canada’s offer to cover Michigan’s $550 million share of building the six-lane $2.1 billion Detroit River crossing, known as the New Crossing.

Gov. Snyder talks Medicaid expansion in Marquette

MARQUETTE — Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s campaign for expanded Medicaid coverage in Michigan continued Tuesday morning in Marquette. The Republican leader spoke at Marquette General Hospital.

Governor Snyder wants to expand eligibility for government-provided health insurance to 320,000 low-income adults next year. In June, the state House approved legislation that would make that happen, but the state Senate adjourned earlier this month without voting on the measure.

Now the governor is pleading for them to take action. His message to the Senate is simple.

“This is our opportunity to step up and take care of several hundred-thousand Michiganders, who don’t have insurance, they’re hardworking people, but they’re caught in a difficult case, because using the E.R. isn’t a good answer for them or for us, so let’s get this solved,” Snyder said.

Oil under the Mackinac Bridge: Protest planned this weekend over Enbridge pipeline

Oil under the Mackinac Bridge Protest planned this weekend over Enbridge pipeline

A protest is planned this weekend to raise awareness of an oil pipeline that runs under Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge.

Representatives of nearly a dozen organizations will gather in St. Ignace on Sunday to rally against the pipeline operated by Enbridge Energy, the Canadian company responsible for the 2010 oil spill in the Kalamazoo River.

The goal of the rally is to let people know there is a pipeline in the area and also what impact a potential spill could have on the area around the straits, said Beth Wallace of the National Wildlife Federation’s Great Lakes Regional Center.

“It’s is a disaster waiting to happen,” said Wallace. “If any spill comparable to what happened in Marshall happens in the Upper Peninsula, it would most definitely make its way to one of the Great Lakes.”

While environmental groups say the pipeline poses a risk to the area, Enbridge said the pipeline has been operating safely and is continuing to be monitored. The pipeline has been there since 1953.

Snyder Administration Pushing To Distance Medicaid Expansion From Obamacare, Gov. Snyder, Lt. Gov. Calley and others now using the phrase, ‘Healthy Michigan’

calley
Originally, Obamacare included the expansion of Medicaid to help cover some of the nation’s uninsured, but the U.S. Supreme Court said that was unconstitutional.

So, now the federal government is using money from the Obamacare bill to entice states to expand it on their own, says one health policy expert.

Touchy Topic: Should School Districts Be Countywide?

Touchy Topic Should School Districts Be Countywide
Get set for a fight between communities throughout Michigan and Lansing. Mike Flanagan, the state’s top education official, wants to discuss a radical change: Moving from local school districts to countywide ones.

Mike Flanagan, the state’s top education official, is tossing out a hot-potato idea.

He’ll kick-start the debate, which obviously will be intense, by issuing a report this week on benefits of having 83 school districts instead of about 550.

That sets up a showdown with local school boards, educators and parents over a bedrock issue: local control of schools.

Here’s how English teacher Marcus Napthen of Belleville High puts it in a front-page Free Press article: “The school is the center of the community.”

Flanagan floated the idea at a legislative hearing last month, education writer Lori Higgins reports in that story atop Sunday’s front page. Flanagan, whose title is superintendent of public instruction, believes enrollment declines and financial swings would be easier to absorbed with fewer districts and many major functions run at the county level.

Michigan Senate meets, does not vote on Medicaid plan despite plea from Democrats

LANSING, MI — The Michigan Senate convened in unusual circumstances on Wednesday, gathering in a chamber without carpet or chairs for what was planned as a procedural meeting but turned into a prolonged Democratic plea for a vote on bipartisan Medicaid expansion legislation.

“We are united on this side of the aisle,” Senate Majority Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer said, joining her colleagues in the back of a chamber torn up by crews working to replace worn carpeting and outdated wiring. “We are ready to work. We are here to work. We know that time is of the essence, and it’s the right thing to do.”
